If You Give Mouse a Cookie Fun

Sunday, September 29, 2013
Circle stories are so great for little firsties!!!  It opens the door to introduce prediction strategies in a simple way for the little guys.
I want to share a fun way our school has used Laura Numeroff books to do this....we have also had a family literacy and math night with our firsties that centered around If you Give a Mouse a Cookie.  I want to share how we prepped for and spent the week leading up to it.  First off - a disclaimer --- This is NOT my idea. :o)  I really don't even know who to credit because it has been in our district for so long.  We actually make cookie costumes.  I mean who wouldn't want a cookie costume?  And what kid doesn't look absolutely adorable in one??!?
{ that is my daughter on the left - a leopard print mouse helper that night. :o)  She was this little one's reading buddy } * from 2010*
Just use brown bulletin board paper and make 2 large circles.  Cut a sponge to look like a chocolate chip and have the kids put little chips all over the circles.  We gave them each a chocolate chip hat and attached the two circles with brown strips ( think size of sentence strips ).
We would make chocolate chip cookies too.  I called up each table to do a certain part of the recipe.  Our wonderful lunch lady would put them in our school oven and we were enjoying yummy, delicious cookies to end our unit. We would be sure to make several batches.  One for our class ( the teachers too - Hello! like I would miss out on that? ) and the families for the lit and math night.
The evening is a lot of work/prep but the kids and parents love it so much!  They basically walk around to 'stations' and one of them was always: take a picture with the mouse.
We always start the night with a fun poem and song of course dressed up in their costumes.
Then the kids walk around to stations with their parents:
Estimation Station
Mouse Craftivity
Reading Corner
Photo Op
Make a Frame
This isn't the one we used ( ours is at school ) but you get the idea:
 The families would come to this estimation station and make a guess.  We would have a little prize for the closest family guess.
How cute are these guys at the reading corner?  We made sure to have lots of Laura Numeroff books available for the kids to read with pillows to make them comfy.
I don't have pics of the rest { Lame - I know } but the mouse craftivity was formed from a paper plate and we had them make frames.  We prepped square frames from our Ellison machine and let them decorate with brown hole punch circles for chocolate chips and sticky decorations from Michael's and markers.  Then when we printed the family pics we would put them in the frames they made and slap a piece of magnetic tape to the back...viola they have an adorable keepsake.
Of course I created a unit that includes story response sheets and ideas to accompany this book....
This unit has tons of ideas and activities to help you make a fun week for your kiddos.  Click {here} for it.
If you are in charge of a family night at your school this year - why not try this fun one for your grade level?  Even if you don't incorporate a family night - this pack is perfect for responding to the story or for a sub in a pinch!

Made it Monday

Monday, September 16, 2013
I'm linking on up with Tara at 4th grade frolics for Made it Monday!!!  I have been busy lately creating products... { club volleyball starts up again officially in November - so even though she's training I feel like I have a little extra time.  Also I made a cute little button M for our last name:  Moore.
So here's the deal...
Buy a pretty frame from Hobby Lobby or your favorite craft store...then some nice paper.  I like the French chic look so I purchased vintage looking paper with handwriting script on it.  Then I purchased brightly colored buttons because I really wanted it to stand out.
Cut the pretty scrapbook paper to size.
Then write your last name letter if that's what you are choosing to use in pencil in the size and font or script you want right on the paper.  It may take a few tries to get it just right.
Next you can start gluing the buttons right down on those pencil lines...I used Aleene's Glue.

You can even use sandpaper to sand down the edges of your frame if you want a more vintage look to it.
Now you have a beautiful little accent piece to put anywhere in your home...I lean it against some other pieces and display it on a crown moulding shelf.
There you have it...doesn't it look nice with other pieces?
Give it a try!!!  Here are some teacher related projects I have been working on too:
{ Click on picture if you wish to read more about it }
Whew!  That's it friends...I have had a busy month...some of these I started in the summer and finally finished up.  Enjoy!
If you want to link on up:  Here's the 411 ~~
What have you been up to?

Five for Friday { a little late }

Saturday, September 14, 2013

I have no excuses... I really don't.  I'm never late ~ seriously I'm a bit OCD about the whole late thing.  I arrive early everywhere and just wait in my car because I HATE being late.  So when I was so exhausted from being a TAXI mom Friday night I just didn't have it in me...then I wondered should I just not do 5 for Friday because of the whole lateness problem...see what I mean?!? I have a bit of a problem...but I want to get over it so I can share my week with all of you wonderful people!
So I started the week off with becoming a grandparent...LOL to an egg!  My son's homework last week was to do the laundry - Whoo- Hoo!  I'm loving middle school electives right now.  This week he has had to take care of baby 'Jessica'.  He even drew a sweet little curl on the top of her head....love the lips he drew...LOL  ~~ So far so good.  He turns her in Monday.  He was cute making sure he took good care of her all week.
We had Patriot Day on 9/11 to remember the fallen.  I found this red and blue maxi skirt over the summer and knew it would be perfect for this day.  Our school even took a moment of silence right after flag salute.
I had lunch with this precious boy...his mom is very sick.  Prayers for 'J' and his family please.
I finished this fun little pack...I'm obsessed with giraffe's and guided reading so it seemed like the perfect match...if you want to check it out...click on the picture.
Lastly I'm loving my 7 new computers that my dad's friend donated to my classroom.  It's perfect for my daily 5 rotation -- so thankful.  How was your week?!?  Don't forget to link on up and join in the fun.

Remind 101 and a { FREEBIE }

Sunday, September 8, 2013
Oh my goodness y'all ~~~~  { and I'm not even from Texas } but it just sounds so appropriate right now!  There is this awesome, amazing app called Remind 101.  My parents this year are LOVING IT!!!  First of all it's...FREE!!!

So here is what it looks like from the app store.  Basically what happens is once you register remind 101 will assign you a phone number { still free of charge }.  Then they will assign you a code.
This is what it looks like when I begin to type a message.  * The only glitchy thing is that there is a text word limit so sometimes my info takes up 2 separate texts.  They don't mind, in fact they are loving it.
 I introduced it at back to school night but you could send home a letter with the directions too.  I gave the parents the number to text and the code.  After they text the number they are asked to identify themselves ( name only ) and they are in my system.  This is the GREATEST invention ever for a teacher I think.  I can send out texts and the parents get great info about school.  FIRST I'm not wasting paper.  I wish I could say I was a save the earth, tree hugger that didn't want to waste paper....BUT nah!  We now have a paper { copy }  limit so I've become very conservative on my number of copies each month.  Anywho I haven't even gotten to the best part yet...LOL  As much as I love my kids and families --- the best part is they can't text me back.  This is a one way system...So if I send out a text to remind them tomorrow is picture day or crazy hair day I can't get responses about questions about money, whatever.  I don't know about you but I feel like if I opened the door to giving them my real number for texting I would be answering questions all night about homework, etc...who knows right?  It is genius!!!  I look super organized because I can send out reminders, heads up on upcoming events, etc.  They feel connected and I'm not dodging calls, or texts all night.  YOU seriously NEED to check it out...it's so easy peasy to sign up.  Give it a try!
Here is my latest math freebie - grab it up.
